By far, the biggest project that we run as a Parliament is Camp Phoenix! Over the past 51 years, BCYP has been running a summer camp that aims to provide a week-long summer camp experience for kids who otherwise would not be able to attend camp for social or financial reasons. This project is very near and dear to many of our hearts, and requires a great deal of dedication from all members to be able to run. Here are some of the ways you can be involved with Camp Phoenix this upcoming year:
1. Pay attention to the Camp Act and Camp Night while at Session! While Session is only the beginning of our sessional year, there is so much to learn about camp when we’re in Victoria, and you don’t want to miss out on the fun night of camp activities, or the important information of the Camp Act.
2. Apply to be Camp Staff! Camp will take a lot of staff to make it run smoothly, so if you’re able to, apply to be on staff!
3. Help fundraise throughout the year! One of the biggest challenges we face in trying to run camp is getting funding. Whether it’s showing up to group fundraisers, completing your personal fundraising, sitting on a fundraising committee, or promoting our ‘Sponsor a Camper’ campaign, there are so many ways you can help us make camp a reality this year.
I hope I’ve managed to transfer some of my excitement to you! I would highly encourage all of you to check out the Camp Phoenix section of our website to see some pictures from past years. I’m so stoked to meet all of you at session, but don’t hesitate to reach out to me at charlotte.white@bcyp.org before then if you’re interested in hearing more about Camp Phoenix!
Yours in Parliament,
Charlotte White
