BCYP 104: Five Ways to Prepare for a Sitting

Having trouble shaking those negative feelings leading up to a sitting? The feeling is nothing new to seasoned BCYP members. Going into a sitting with the wrong mindset can be awful for many Parliamentarians, old and new. Here are five ways to avoid having a bad sitting!

Just breathe!

A good way to get rid of anxieties is to dedicate some time to focus on breathing. A favourite technique of mine is “4-7-8 breathing”. To do this, you inhale through the nose for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, then exhale through the mouth for 8 seconds! This method has been scientifically proven to reduce anxiety, and could save you before a big speech!

#HydrationNation

This one is my favourite. Before, during, or after a sitting, the water coolers behind the Chamber are always filled with the greatest, clearest, chilliest water. The best way to stay healthy is to stay hydrated! Also, there are always great people hanging around the water coolers. Give this method a chance, and you’ll meet some awesome Parliamentarians you normally wouldn’t get the chance to.

Get Your Desk Ready

Plan ahead! By spending a little bit of time during breaks preparing for the next sitting, you’ll be way ahead of your neighbours. Need to get a motion slip? Have something to say about legislation or a PMR? Write down what you need on a spare piece of paper, and organize your desk so things are accessible. If you write down your thoughts as you think of them, you’ll be ready to speak at any time!

Go For A Walk

The BC Legislature is one of the most beautiful buildings in the province. If you feel like you need some time away from everything, roam the long and regal hallways of the legislature! Everybody needs some quiet time every once in a while, and this is a great opportunity for some. Just be sure to not cause trouble and respect people at work.

Planning to Speak? Practice!

History’s best public speakers ALWAYS practiced! Find a friend you trust or a good mirror, and refine your speech. BCYP is great for improving your public speaking, so why not practice those skills? When it’s your turn to speak, you’ll thank yourself for practicing.
